2022 State Art Results
Concordia’s Art team competed toward the end of second semester in the TAPPS 6A State Art Championships. For the 6th consecutive year, the Crusaders finished in the top 5 with their 6th straight 3rd place finish.
The competition included 20 different categories of visual art, photography, digital art, physical art, multimedia, and art history. Concordia had at least one member of the Art team place in 13 of the 20 different categories. Awards were given for the top 8 placements in each category with 1st place earning 10 points, 2nd place with 8 points, and 3rd through 8th with 6-1 points respectively.
Argyle Liberty Christian finished as State Champion with 294 points, Plano John Paul II finished 2nd with 163 points, followed by Concordia with 130, Dallas Bishop Lynch with 125 in 4th place, and San Antonio Antonian rounding out the top 5.
Concordia scored 130 points from their various submissions, and five of those submissions were in the multimedia categories of Short Film Narrative and Short Film Documentary. These films earned the Crusaders 42 points (almost 1/3 of the team’s total points), by placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in Short Film Narrative and 1st and 2nd in Short Film Documentary.
In addition to the state titles for Short Film Narrative from Joseph L. (So.) and crew, and Short Film Documentary from Hailey S. (So.), the third individual state title for the Crusaders came from Margaret F. (So.) in the category of Relief for her Blind to the Colors piece earning 10 points for the team.
An additional 19 points came from Sierra M. (So.) for her state runner-up piece in On-Site Drawing (8 points), her 3rd place painting You Are What You Eat (6 points), and her 6th place in 2D mixed media (3 points). Two other Crusader artists placed in the top 8 in three different categories in addition to Sierra M. (So.). Rebecca K. (So.) and Kaelan M. (So.) earned the team valuable points in three different categories, showing their range as artists.
The art team featured several seniors that Concordia will miss for their contributions over the years. Three seniors placed in the top 8 from two different submissions when Will Karim, Jacob Dotson, and Emma Fangmann earned the team 10, 9, and 7 points respectively. Giselle Pedraza, Colgan Nash, and Juliana Brandao all closed their senior season with a top 8 finish that combined to give the Saders 11 points.
Concordia’s Visual Arts team will look a little different for the 2022-2023 season as long time Head Coach, Mr. Steve Karner, took a call to teach and coach at Martin Luther High School in Milwaukee, Wisc. Under Mr. Karner’s guidance, Concordia continually placed well at the state competition with 6-consecutive 3rd place finishes and several individual state titles. The new look Crusaders will be led by Mrs. Heather Vogel and Mr. Brian Zimont. Zimont is Concordia’s newest art teacher and also the Girls Basketball Head Coach.
Several of the pieces/projects from the State Art team will be on display at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year in the new art gallery at Concordia. The art gallery was a project included in last year’s Back to School Challenge and will be used to display the best of the best art selections from the various art classes. This Fall, we are excited to host a “Sip and See” unveiling for the new gallery which will showcase the amazing talents of our students and faculty for the future.
