Boys Basketball Head Coach Bill Honeck '88 Earns 400th Career Win at Concordia

On Dec. 28, 2023, Concordia’s Boys Basketball team avenged an earlier in the season loss to The John Cooper School Dragons with a dominant 74-50 win as part of the Private School Classic. This victory was the Crusaders 7th on the young season and Head Coach Bill Honeck’s 400th career win at Concordia!

Coach Honeck has been at the helm of the Boys Basketball program at Concordia since 2008. In those 16 years, he has amassed a 400-169 record, winning over 70% of games. During the tenure, Concordia has reached the State Final Four in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022, with the school’s 2nd State Championship title being earned in 2018.

Honeck is the only person in school history to be part of both boys basketball state titles, as he was a playing member of the 1988 team that won the State Championship and then the Head Coach 30 years later for the second title. He follows in his late father’s footsteps as Bill Honeck Sr. was one of Concordia’s earliest teachers and coaches with Honeck Sr. having guided the Girls Basketball team to the state final four, also in 1988.

The Boys Basketball program has helped many Crusader players be recruited to continue playing at the next level in college and professional-level programs. Currently, there are over 10 alumni playing basketball around the country and world having been coached by Honeck.

“Congrats to Coach Honeck. It’s not surprise for all his success at Concordia, as he has the great ability to get the best out of his players.” – Matt Neidigk ’92, Director of Athletics and Head Girls Basketball Coach

For the course of his career in education and coaching, Honeck has coached for 28 years at the high school level with a 694-259 overall record (73%). Over those many seasons, Honeck has guided three different schools to state titles (Sweet Water Christian, Westminster Christian Academy, and Concordia).

During the school day, Mr. Honeck is a theology teacher for Concordia students in addition to being the Head Boys Golf Coach in the Spring athletic season.

As the district portion of the schedule is ramped up in early 2024, we will keep an eye on another milestone of the 700th career victory, something that very few high school coaches in Texas can claim.

Way to go Coach Honeck! We are proud of you and thankful for your leadership!
