Both Crusader Golf Teams Finding Success in Local Tourneys; State is the end Goal!

Concordia’s Boys and Girls Golf Teams have hit the links this Spring with both teams finishing in the top-3 of several tournaments. While the teams are finding their best playing lineups, both teams have their eyes focused on getting back to the State Golf Tournament. The individual honors and team wins are enjoyable, but the best time to play your best golf is end of April and early May.

At the beginning of April, both teams finished 1st in the Frassati Catholic School Tournament at Windrose Golf Club. The boys team had the low score of 305 with Howie Keen ’25, Keegan Stricklin ’24, and Caleb Blackburn ’23 finishing in 4th, 5th, and 6th. The girls team finished atop the leaderboard as well behind Olivia Wilhelm ’24 and Abby Plagens ’23 finishing 2nd and 3rd overall.

Both teams will compete in the District Golf Tournament on April 24-25, 2023 at Gleannloch Pines, a course that both teams are very familiar with. The top 4 teams from the District Tournament will then advance to the State Tournament.

The girls team is seeking their second trip to State in school history. In 2021, the team was very young but put scores together to earn the trip of the top 8 schools in Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) 6A Division. The Lady Crusaders lone senior golfer, Abby Plagens ’23 continues to lead the team in her final season and is seeking to make it back to State for a third consecutive year (team in 2021 and individual in 2022).

The boys team is primed to make another run at State after a brief hiatus. In 2019, the team finished in 3rd place as a team which was also the last time the boys team has qualified for State. There have been several individually strong golfers to make State as single entries, but this year’s squad seems up the challenge. Seniors Caleb Blackburn ’23 (Aquinas College commit) and Matthew Marsh ’23 lead an experienced team of 20+ golfers.

Any one of Concordia’s top boy and girl golfers can shoot the low mark on any given day, which provides a healthy depth chart pushing each player to play their best. We are excited to see how the next month unfolds for these programs!
